This test detects Trichomonas vaginalis, a single-celled microorganism that causes trichomoniasis, a urogenital infection transmitted mainly through sexual contact. Infection occurs during unprotected intercourse. The condition may be symptomatic or asymptomatic. The test helps confirm the presence of the pathogen and allows timely treatment.
Indications
- abnormal urogenital discharge
- itching or burning in the genital area
- discomfort or pain during urination
- unprotected sexual contact / new partner
- screening during pregnancy
- post-treatment follow-up
Procedure
The sample is collected from the urethra and/or vagina using a sterile swab (depending on the physician’s indication).

Preparation:
- do not urinate 2–3 hours before the test
- avoid sexual intercourse for 24 hours prior
- do not use vaginal products (suppositories, creams, douching) before testing
- avoid antibiotics for 10–14 days before the test (if possible)
