This test detects Mycoplasma and Ureaplasma spp., small opportunistic microorganisms that can colonize the urogenital tract. They may be transmitted through sexual contact and, under certain conditions, can cause urogenital infections. In men, the infection is often asymptomatic. The test helps identify the pathogens and initiate timely treatment.

Indications

  • urethral discharge
  • burning or discomfort during urination
  • suspected urogenital infections
  • screening for sexually transmitted infections
  • post-treatment follow-up

Procedure
A sample is collected from the urethra using a sterile swab. The procedure takes a few minutes and may cause mild discomfort.

Method
PCR (polymerase chain reaction) and/or culture for detection of Mycoplasma and Ureaplasma spp.

Preparation:

  • do not urinate 2–3 hours before the test
  • avoid sexual intercourse for 24–48 hours prior
  • avoid antibiotics for 2–4 weeks before the test (if possible)
