Gardnerella vaginalis is a gram-negative anaerobic bacterium that may be present in small amounts within normal vaginal flora, but overgrowth is a major cause of bacterial vaginosis and vaginal dysbiosis.
It can adhere to vaginal epithelial cells, form biofilms, and produce enzymes such as sialidases and mucinases, contributing to disruption of the normal microbiota balance.
It is primarily associated with bacterial vaginosis.
