Incision and drainage of a peritonsillar abscess is an emergency surgical procedure aimed at evacuating purulent content from the area surrounding the palatine tonsil. A peritonsillar abscess is a complication of acute tonsillitis and is characterized by severe pain, swelling, and difficulty swallowing.

The procedure enables rapid elimination of the infection source, reduces tissue pressure, and prevents the spread of inflammation.

Indications

  • Peritonsillar abscess;
  • Severe unilateral throat pain;
  • Difficulty swallowing and opening the mouth (trismus);
  • Fever;
  • Swelling and asymmetry of the pharynx;
  • Failure of conservative treatment.

Procedure/Duration

  • Performed under local anesthesia, with sedation if needed;
  • A small incision is made at the abscess site;
  • Pus is evacuated and drainage may be placed if necessary;
  • The cavity is treated with antiseptic solutions;
  • Duration: 10–20 minutes;
  • Usually performed on an outpatient basis.

Contraindications

  • Severe coagulation disorders;
  • Severe general condition (relative);
  • Allergy or intolerance to anesthetics;
  • Limitations are minimal due to the emergency nature of the procedure.

Rehabilitation/Restrictions

  • Rapid symptom relief after the procedure;
  • Mild throat pain for a few days;
  • Antibiotic therapy is prescribed;
  • Antiseptic gargles are recommended;
  • Avoid hard and hot foods;
  • Follow-up with a physician.

Advantages

  • Rapid elimination of the purulent focus;
  • Pain and intoxication reduction;
  • Prevention of infection spread;
  • Minimally invasive;
  • Can be performed outpatient.
