Partial resection of the middle nasal turbinate in cases of mucocele is a surgical procedure aimed at removing the pathologically altered portion of the middle turbinate to eliminate the mucocele (a mucus-filled cystic lesion). The procedure is typically performed endoscopically through the nasal cavity without external incisions, ensuring high precision and minimal tissue trauma.

Mucoceles may exert pressure on surrounding structures, impair nasal breathing and sinus drainage, and contribute to chronic inflammation. Removal of the affected tissue helps restore normal nasal anatomy and function.

Indications

  • Presence of a mucocele in the middle nasal turbinate;
  • Chronic nasal obstruction;
  • Impaired drainage of the paranasal sinuses;
  • Recurrent or chronic sinusitis;
  • Facial pain or pressure sensation;
  • Ineffectiveness of conservative treatment;
  • Suspected complications involving adjacent structures.

Procedure/Duration

  • The procedure is performed endoscopically through the nasal passages;
  • Microsurgical instruments are used for precise tissue removal;
  • Can be performed under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia;
  • Average duration: 30–60 minutes;
  • Hospitalization — depending on the case (often outpatient or 1-day stay).

Contraindications

  • Acute infections (respiratory infections, acute sinusitis);
  • Severe coagulation disorders;
  • Decompensated chronic diseases;
  • Severe general condition of the patient;
  • Pregnancy (relative contraindication).

Rehabilitation/Restrictions

  • Mild nasal congestion and swelling may occur in the first days;
  • Saline nasal irrigation is recommended;
  • Physical activity should be limited for 5–7 days;
  • Avoid heat exposure (sauna, hot baths);
  • Follow-up visits with an ENT specialist;
  • Full recovery within 1–2 weeks.

Advantages

  • Minimally invasive endoscopic technique;
  • No external incisions;
  • Fast recovery;
  • High precision with preservation of healthy tissues;
  • Improved nasal breathing and sinus drainage;
  • Reduced risk of recurrence and complications.

IMPORTANT!

It is very important to note that the information in this section is not intended for self-diagnosis or treatment. If you are experiencing pain or worsening of a condition, you must consult a physician for diagnostic investigations. Only a qualified specialist can provide an accurate diagnosis and determine the appropriate treatment.
To ensure the most precise and consistent evaluation of test results, it is recommended to perform the analyses in the same laboratory. This is because different laboratories may use varying methods and measurement units for similar investigations.

Preparation:

  • ENT consultation and endoscopic examination;
  • CT scan of paranasal sinuses (if indicated);
  • Blood tests (CBC, coagulation profile, etc. );
  • Anesthesiology consultation (for general anesthesia);
  • Temporary discontinuation of medications affecting coagulation (as advised by a doctor);
  • Fasting for 6–8 hours before the procedure (if general anesthesia is planned).
