Cucumber, f244
Cucumber is a vegetable that may cause allergic reactions, more commonly in individuals sensitized to pollen (especially ragweed or grasses). Its allergens are associated with profilin proteins, leading to cross-reactivity with other plant foods (melon, watermelon, zucchini). Reactions are more common with fresh cucumber, as heat treatment reduces allergenicity. The most typical presentation is oral allergy syndrome.
Indications
Suspected cucumber allergy in the presence of the following symptoms after consumption:
- itching or tingling in the mouth, lips, or tongue
- swelling of the lips, tongue, or throat
- skin reactions (urticaria, rash, itching)
- rhinitis, sneezing
- gastrointestinal symptoms (nausea, abdominal discomfort)
- known allergy to pollen (ragweed, grasses) or other cucurbits
Procedure
Specific IgE to cucumber allergen (F244) is determined through a blood test:
- venous blood sample collection
- analysis using immunoassay methods
- helps identify sensitization to cucumber
The procedure takes a few minutes, and results are usually available within a few days.
Preparation:
- no special preparation is required
- testing is recommended fasting or 3–4 hours after a meal
- avoid alcohol consumption before testing
- avoid intense physical activity before sampling
- antihistamines generally do not affect results, but inform your doctor about any medications taken
