Endoscopic sphenoidotomy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure aimed at opening and draining the sphenoid sinus using endoscopic techniques. The procedure is performed through the nasal cavity without external incisions and allows elimination of inflammation, restoration of sinus ventilation, and drainage of pathological contents.
Indications
- Chronic sphenoiditis
- Acute sphenoiditis unresponsive to conservative treatment
- Cysts and polyps of the sphenoid sinus
- Mucocele
- Suspected neoplasms
- Impaired drainage of the sphenoid sinus
- Complicated course of sinusitis
Procedure / duration
The surgery is performed endonasally using an endoscope. Through the natural nasal passages, the surgeon enlarges the sphenoid sinus ostium, removes pathological contents, and, if necessary, altered tissues.
Average duration is 30–60 minutes. It may be performed under local or general anesthesia depending on the clinical situation.
Contraindications
- Acute infectious diseases
- Coagulation disorders
- Severe decompensated systemic diseases
- Uncontrolled arterial hypertension
- Contraindications to anesthesia
Rehabilitation / limitations
- Mild nasal congestion and discomfort in the first days
- Limitation of physical activity for 7–10 days
- Avoidance of sauna and overheating
- Regular nasal irrigation as prescribed by the doctor
- Follow-up visits with an ENT specialist
Full recovery usually takes 1–3 weeks.
