Anterior nasal packing is a medical procedure used to stop nosebleeds by inserting special tampons or hemostatic materials into the anterior part of the nasal cavity.
It is applied when simple bleeding control measures are ineffective and works by providing mechanical compression of the nasal mucosal vessels.

Indications

  • Anterior epistaxis
  • Failure of local compression and vasoconstrictor therapy
  • Recurrent nosebleeds
  • Nasal mucosal trauma
  • Bleeding associated with arterial hypertension

Procedure / Duration

  • The procedure is performed in an outpatient or inpatient setting.
  • After preparation of the nasal mucosa (with anesthesia if needed), the physician inserts a sterile tampon or a special hemostatic material into the nasal cavity.
  • Procedure duration: 10–20 minutes.
  • The packing is usually left in place for 24–72 hours, depending on the clinical situation.

Contraindications

  • Severe nasal septum deviation (relative)
  • Allergy to materials or medications used
  • Suspected posterior epistaxis (requires a different approach)

Recovery / Restrictions

  • Discomfort and difficulty breathing through the nose while the packing is in place
  • Do not remove the packing without medical supervision
  • Limit physical activity
  • Avoid overheating, hot food, and hot beverages
  • After removal - keep the nasal mucosa moisturized and follow a gentle care regimen

Advantages

  • Rapid and effective bleeding control
  • Simple procedure
  • Minimally invasive
  • Can be performed in an outpatient setting
  • Widely available method
