Honey can trigger allergic reactions in individuals sensitive to pollen, enzymes, or other components present in the product. Allergic reactions may be immediate or delayed and can manifest on the skin, digestive system, or respiratory system.
Indications
Suspected honey allergy with the following symptoms:
- itching or hives
- swelling of the lips, tongue, or throat
- nausea, abdominal pain, or vomiting
- cough, difficulty breathing
Procedure
Specific IgE to honey is determined via blood test:
- venous blood collection
- analysis using immunoassay methods
- identifies sensitization to honey components
The procedure takes a few minutes, and results are usually available within a few days.
Preparation:
- no special preparation required
- testing recommended fasting or 3–4 hours after a meal
- avoid alcohol before testing
- avoid intense physical activity before sampling
- antihistamines generally do not affect results, but inform your doctor about any medications taken
